Even in the midst of a pandemic, we’re finally starting to see the world regain some measure of normalcy…… Is it me, or was this the longest 3(ish) months of our lives? I couldn’t wait to get back outside. I really didn’t care what I did, I just needed a new adventure…
My birthday was at the very beginning of this whole Covid ordeal when everything was starting to shut down, so yea, I got to do absolutely NOTHING! By the times Jamil’s birthday rolled around, I had to make sure he didn’t acquire the same fate.
I did some research and came across Alexandria Balloon Flights in Pittstown, NJ. I initially liked the idea of a hot air balloon ride, because it was new to us (and y’all know I’m all about gaining new experiences), and at the same time, safe enough so that we wouldn’t be jeopardizing our health. It was also the perfect activity that allowed for us to maintain social distancing.
Upon Arrival
When we arrived, we were greeted by Kevin, the owner of the operation. We signed some “I’m not responsible if you die” papers (you know the forms they shove at you, when you’re doing something potentially dangerous) and waited for about 30 mins to fly – because apparently, the wind has to be going a certain direction and speed beforehand. I didn’t mind the wait though, I enjoyed the rural scene, watched a few small airplanes take off and took a couple selfies (duh!)
When it was time to prepare the balloon, we were taken to a more secluded area with Kevin and his team. Jamil was asked to help out, which was kind of weird to me – because, as customers, we weren’t exactly prepared to help with the setup; but in the end, it added to our experience and served as a good photo-op.
The Flight
The flight could most accurately be described as smooth and serene. You’re gliding through the air, going wherever the wind takes you …..literally. Funny, I always assumed that Balloons could be driven, like an airplane or helicopter. But they’re actually controlled solely by the wind, and the burner that keeps it afloat. Speaking of burner, that thing is HOT! It’s recommended that you wear a cap to lessen the amount of heat you feel above your head; especially if you’re tall like us. Jamil sat down most of them time; he couldn’t take it (lol). The burner doesn’t stay on for the entire ride though, it comes on about every 2 mins for a few seconds.
Since the direction of the flight and landing area are uncertain, the Pilot’s crew follow the balloon on land. They communicate via radio so that the Pilot is able to transmit our location, and when/where we will be landing.
Landing
The landing was pretty rough. A lot less smooth then I thought it would be. We ended up having to land in a parking lot, as opposed to a softer area, which I’m sure contributed mostly to that experience. If you have a bad back, You might want to reconsider.
General Information
I paid $595 for a private flight. In my research, I found that most balloon rides cost about the same. We were given a bottle of champagne and a cute little pin at the conclusion of the ride.
Although the private flights are a bit more expensive than the shared ones, I HIGHLY recommend that you spend the money if you can afford to. The basket seemed barely big enough to fit the three of us (us, including the pilot), we seriously were shoulder to shoulder the entire time. So the thought of having an extra two passengers would have been way too tight for my liking.
If you’re afraid of heights, or get nauseous easily, this isn’t something you need to be afraid of! It’s not the type activity that gives you an adrenaline rush or makes you feel like you’re going to fall. It’s really calm; if you can handle being on an airplane, you can handle ballooning.
You go to an altitude of about 1,000 feet, and the ride lasts about 45 minutes.
The crew took photos of us that were emailed the next day (included in the cost).
Overall…..
Would I do it again? Ehhhh, maybe not. I absolutely enjoyed the experience, but I’m the thrill chaser type gal, I don’t imagine I’ll ever think to do something so mild again, unless as a last resort. Would I recommend you try it out?? YES! I don’t see anyone not appreciating the experience of having done a Hot Air Balloon ride! Whether you love it, or decide it isn’t for you, at least you can say you did it 😉.
Are you willing to try???
XO,
Lexi💋
