If getting your car washed while Michael Myers, Pennywise, zombies, and other creepy characters lurk outside your windows sounds like your kind of Halloween activity, let me introduce you to one of the more unusual spooky-season experiences I’ve found in New Jersey: Screamline Haunted Car Wash in Rockaway, NJ. I originally visited the haunted car wash back in 2024, and honestly, I knew I had to try it for two very simple reasons: I love all things horror, and my car was filthy. 😂 It was a win-win. And yes, while you are being scared, the outside of your car is actually getting washed.

Now that Screamline Haunted Car Wash is returning for the 2026 Halloween season, I wanted to revisit my original review and update it with this year’s information, what the experience was actually like for us, and a few things I think are worth knowing before you go.
My Experience at the Haunted Car Wash
When we went, the experience started before we ever reached the actual car wash. There were scare actors walking around while cars waited in line, so you do not necessarily get to sit peacefully in your car and prepare yourself for what is coming. The Halloween atmosphere starts almost immediately, and that actually made the wait feel like part of the attraction instead of just dead time before the real experience began.
Once we got inside, there were characters, lights, smoke, animatronics, and jump scares happening all around the car while the wash was running. We encountered characters like Michael Myers, who is my personal favorite, along with Scream, Pennywise, and several others throughout the experience. If you are the type of person who gets nervous when a creepy character suddenly appears directly outside your window, there are definitely a few moments that can catch you off guard.
Is the Screamline Haunted Car Wash NJ Scary?
How scary you find it is probably going to depend on how easily you scare and how much horror content you already enjoy. When I went, I rated it an 8 out of 10 on my personal scare-o-meter. It was creepy enough to make us jump and scream, but for me, a traditional walk-through haunted house is still going to feel scarier because you are physically moving through the attraction instead of sitting inside your own car.
Can the Haunted Car Wash Actors Touch You or Open Your Doors?
When I visited, the actors did not touch us, and guests were also asked not to touch the actors. Current 2026 attraction information also lists touching as not allowed, so the scares come from the characters, jump scares, and everything happening around your car rather than physical contact.
I did learn one thing very quickly, though: lock your doors… or don’t. During my visit, actors could open an unlocked car door as part of the scare, which definitely changes the feeling when you are sitting there assuming your vehicle is your safe little bubble. Policies and individual interactions can always change from year to year, so I would still follow whatever instructions the attraction gives you when you arrive.
How Long Does the Haunted Car Wash Take?
Our visit was surprisingly quick. We got in line at exactly 8:08 p.m. and were finished by 8:25 p.m., so our entire experience, from getting in line to leaving, took less than 20 minutes. For 2026, the attraction says typical waits are around five to ten minutes, although the final two nights of the season can reach approximately 15 to 25 minutes.

How Much Is the Haunted Car Wash in 2026?
Tickets for the 2026 Screamline Haunted Car Wash are currently listed at $40 per vehicle rather than per person. There is also an opening-weekend bonus for 2026: guests who visit on October 2 or October 3 are expected to receive a free car wash voucher to use another time.
Is the Haunted Car Wash Good for Kids?
I would call this one kid-dependent rather than automatically kid-friendly. Being inside your own vehicle can make the experience feel less intimidating than walking through a traditional haunted house, especially for a child who feels safer sitting next to a parent. At the same time, you are still sitting inside a dark car wash while scary characters appear around the windows, lights are flashing, sounds are going off, and actors are actively trying to get a reaction out of you.
For a child who loves Halloween and does not mind jump scares, this could be hilarious and become one of those experiences they talk about afterward. For a child who already hides when the Spirit Halloween animatronics start moving, I would think about it a little more carefully. 😂 The attraction currently describes the experience as moderately scary and recommends it for ages five and older, but I would pay more attention to your child’s comfort level with clowns, masked characters, zombies, loud noises, darkness, flashing lights, and jump scares than the age recommendation alone. But despite all of that, I’m definitely taking my 2 yr old son this year.
Is Screamline Haunted Car Wash Worth It?
For us, yes. Was it the scariest haunted attraction I have ever done? No. Was it creative, fun, different, and something we still remember? Absolutely. That is really the appeal of it. There are plenty of haunted houses, hayrides, and spooky trails around New Jersey every fall, but driving your filthy car through a car wash while horror characters terrorize your family through the windows is a little more memorable than your average Saturday night. 😂
I also think the per-car pricing can make it feel like a better value for families or groups because you are not buying an individual ticket for everyone inside. I would still give Screamline Haunted Car Wash an 8 out of 10 on my scare-o-meter. It gave us a good scare, it was something different to do together, and I left with Halloween memories and a cleaner car, so I am still calling that a win. What to Know Before You Go
If there is a specific night you want to visit, I would buy your tickets ahead of time, especially if you are planning to go later in October when Halloween attractions tend to get busier. I would also give yourself a little flexibility with timing rather than assuming you will be in and out immediately, since wait times can change depending on the night, weather, and crowd size. If you are bringing kids, make sure they are comfortable with masked characters, loud noises, flashing lights, darkness, and jump scares before you go. Since dates, hours, and event policies can change, I would also check Screamline’s current information before making the drive.
