I’m all too familiar with dragging along my goals and just being downright unmotivated at times. Especially now, where everything can easily get overwhelming. Staying consistent and inspired isn’t always easy. And with the New Year approaching, we can use some ways stay on top of our resolutions (especially that weight loss goal we give up on by February. Am I right?). Here are a few things I do to stay on track…
• THINK ABOUT WHY I STARTED IN THE FIRST PLACE
What’s your ‘WHY’? What’s the initial reason or purpose you started what you’re doing? Think about this daily! If you’re trying to lose weight for a special occasion, imagine what you’d look like /feel like when you’re done. Or maybe you set out to learn a new skill, like cooking, to impress a special someone. Whatever it is, your purpose can never be fulfilled if you quit. So for your own sake, KEEP GOING!
• AVOID THE BURNOUT
One of the quickest ways to feel unmotivated is to burnout. While you want to work hard, be careful not to overwork yourself. Learn to ask for help when you need it and pace your steps accordingly. Burning yourself out will frustrate and hinder the process. So take your time. Keep in mind, slow and steady wins the race.
• SURROUND MYSELF WITH OPTIMISTIC PEOPLE
The company you keep is very important. Limit the time you spend engaging with lazy, negative minded individuals. They have a way of making you believe all of your efforts are a waste. Instead, FIND YOUR TRIBE! Surround yourself with people who share the same intentions. Mainly those who have already done what it is you’re trying to accomplish. Also, following social media accounts that give you a visual of your intended goal could be a huge help. By seeing what other people were able to achieve will surely keep you focused. And remember , try not to listen to people who haven’t attempted what you’re doing (because, what fruitful advice can they really give?).
• JOURNAL MY PROGRESS
I’ve become a huge fan of journaling. I love to write about all aspects of my life. It gives me a way to reflect on my feelings, my successes, failures and routines. The same goes for our goals. Journaling gives us a way to measure our progress and keep track of the things that may have motivated us in the first place. Definitely give this a try.
• KEEP GOD INVOLVED
Whatever your religious belief, make it the center of everything you do. Sometimes, I need to be reminded that I’m only human and I’ll have setbacks. Referencing scripture helps me at the times I feel defeated, and gives me strength when I need it the most. Go allow God to give you a little boost if you need some motivation 😉.
• UNDERSTAND THAT THINGS TAKE TIME
REALLY understand this! Most of us want instant results, but unfortunately, things don’t happen that way. Our motivation usually dies when we feel like we’ve put in so much effort, but see minimal results. Expect to spend some time on yourself! No, your business won’t make 100k in the first week. No, you won’t get over that fear or addiction in an instant. And no…. you won’t loose 50lbs by tonight (sad to say). Point is, be kind to yourself and stay consistent. These things time! So be realistic in your expectations and take it a day by day. And remember, keep thinking BIG! I promise, you’ll succeed 😊.
How do you keep yourself motivated?
