Traveling solo to a foreign country is one of the most exciting and rewarding things you can do. Whether you’re chasing adventure, seeking self-discovery, or just need a break from the familiar, solo travel gives you complete freedom to explore the world on your own terms.

But before you book that ticket and pack your bags, it’s important to plan ahead. Traveling alone comes with its own set of challenges—and the more prepared you are, the better your trip will be.

Here are 10 important things to know before traveling alone to a different country:

Do Your Research

Don’t just wing it. Learn about the country’s culture, customs, and what’s considered polite (or not!). Research local laws, social norms, dress codes, and anything else that might be different from home. Even a few basics—like tipping etiquette or how to greet someone—can make a big difference in your experience.

Learn the Local Language (Just a Bit!)

You don’t need to be fluent, but knowing a few essential phrases like “hello,” “please,” “thank you,” and “help” can go a long way. It shows respect and can be a lifesaver in unfamiliar situations. Apps like Google Translate, Translate Now or Duolingo can be helpful on the go.

Put Safety First

Solo travelers need to be extra aware of their surroundings. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas, keep your belongings secure, and trust your gut if something doesn’t feel right. Register with your embassy if possible, and always know how to contact local emergency services.

Have a Financial Backup Plan

Make sure you have more than one way to pay for things—carry a mix of cash and cards, and keep them in different places. Notify your bank before traveling to avoid blocked cards. Also, make a rough budget and stick to it—solo travel can add up quickly when you’re not splitting costs.

Get Travel Insurance

This one’s non-negotiable. Travel insurance can save you thousands in the event of medical emergencies, theft, or trip cancellations. Don’t skip it—especially when you’re on your own in a new place. Because, how mad would you be if you couldn’t make your trip AND couldn’t get your money back 😩.

Book Your First Few Nights

Even if you love being spontaneous, it’s smart to have a place to stay your first night or two. After a long flight, the last thing you want is to wander around looking for accommodation. Booking ahead also gives you peace of mind when you arrive. This one goes without saying though. Who really plans a trip without booking hotel accommodations?

Know How You’ll Get Around

Before you land, look into public transportation options, local rideshare apps, or how to find a safe taxi. In some places, it’s better to avoid certain types of transport. Having a plan makes everything smoother—and safer.

Pack Light, but Smart

You’ll be handling all your luggage alone, so pack light. Include a small first-aid kit, any prescriptions, copies of your passport, and a universal power adapter. Keep essentials in your carry-on, just in case your checked bag gets delayed or lost.

Stay Connected

Share your itinerary with someone you trust and check in regularly. Most people would tag in their parents, spouse or one of their adult children. Also, you’d want to consider getting a local SIM card or an international phone plan so you can stay connected without racking up huge roaming fees.

Embrace the Solo Journey

Traveling alone is a chance to learn, grow, and connect with the world in a truly personal way. Be open to meeting people, trying new things, and letting the journey shape you. Keep a travel journal or take lots of photos—you’ll want to remember this.
